HP Enhances of 3PAR StoreServ With Cost Effective Flash Storage
HP Recently announcements to their 3PAR StorServe Storage line, focusing on scalability and lowering the cost of flash storage. HP acquired 3PAR in 2010, in a 2.35 billion dollar deal, that paid 3PAR share holders 33 dollars per share. Since the acquisition, 3PAR has been integrated into HP’s storage portfolio, and also served as basis for HP’s converged infrastructure offerings.
One of the most interesting aspects of the enhancements to the 3PAR StorServ line is the targeted price point. HP has announced storage available at $1.50 per usable gigabyte, as well as a new enterprise flash family. With such massive growth expected by IDC in the coming years in the flash arena, HP has enhanced the product suite to meet the growing flash needs of its customers. The new price point is just one feature to enable HP customers to embrace the HP 3PAR StorServ all flash based technologies. The New HP 3PAR StorServe Storage 20000 line also bastes over 3.2 million IOPS, and an 85% space savings when compared to a traditional storage array. The all flash 3PAR StorServ 20800 has the ability to scale up to 15 petabytes.
At the heart of this announcement is a new drive for the StorServ family. New 3.84 TB cMLC SSDs are now available in the storage arrays, providing unparalleled density and capacity. The use of this drive, as well as further flash optimization software features is what allows the HP 3PAR StorServ line to hit this aggressive price point. The use of a drive this size also brings the costing model closer to the price point of the 10,000 RPM SAS drives used in pervious generations of the product. In addition to this new even higher density drive, the new arrays are powered by the HP 3PAR Gen5 Thin Express ASIC. This allows for enhanced data validation capacity, allowing for transmission errors to be corrected transparently between the storage array and HP ProLiant servers.
