Getting a CRUSH on Ceph: Inside the CRUSH Algorithm
Eric Wright, vExpert, Cisco Champion

Here at Enterprise Storage Guide, we like to see the deep details on storage, and we have come to enjoy having access to many exciting technologies. Recently Red Hat acquired Inktank, which is most well known as the creator of the open source object storage environment Ceph.

Behind the Curtains on CRUSH

CRUSH, which is an acronym for Controlled Replication Under Scalable Hashing, is the algorithm that drives the Ceph object storage environment. There are a number of components that comprise the inner workings of the Ceph environment that have been very well laid out by Ross Turk here at the recent OpenStack Summit in Atlanta:

For those like me who want to really get under the hood with Ceph, we recommend that you take the time to read this paper published explaining the fundamentals that drove the creation of CRUSH.

As OpenStack continues to gain steam, the object storage platform wars will definitely be heating up. Now is the right time to start educating ourselves on what makes Ceph stand out from its competitors.
