Adding More V to Your Vols: VMware Opens VVols Beta to the Public
You’re not seeing double, there are 2 Vs up there. VMware has been developing their Virtual Volumes offering since 2012, and obviously they had some R&D leading up to even that time.
VVols are About Policy
You’re going to continue to see this trend. VVols are about performance and SLA based on policy. By encapsulating the virtual machine files and volmes, VVols provide a storage container of sorts which will leverage the same type of features that were individually available with SIOC (Storage I/O Control) and SDRS (Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler) but with something more this time.
By adding policy-based management, the storage workload will become adaptive and programmable. These are key features as we move toward a more “cloudy” style of resource and workload management.
